Getting lost in paradise

INTERLUDE !

Once again I did a shoot with Look Alive. Take five if you love the overall composition and most importantly acknowledging the feature from super model Chelsee from Iconic Model Management…..she took it to a whole new level. Lastly, i’d like to offer my most sincere gratitude to Orinique_photography & 808Afrika for your amazing support.

Now lets dive into it !

  1. PRACTICE
    AA

We’ve all probably heard the saying, “practice makes perfect”, well guess what, I’m saying it again. You can never go wrong with practice. Personally, I’ve taught my body to always behave as if there’s cameras around, such that I’m used to standing or sitting like I own a mansion in Malibu and a street with my name on it. This will not only build your confidence but will also give you a whole lot of poses to choose from because you’ll be used to standing or sitting like its a photo-shoot. Mirrors work too, practice in front of it, or better yet take a friend out, develop a habit of taking photos & soon enough you’ll start to notice change in the way your photos look with time.

2. SMILE OR DON'T SMILE ?

To be honest this is really a matter of preference but then a whole lot of factors come into it. Like, do you have a nice smile ? Do you have nice teeth ? Does the idea of the photo you want to bring out require you to smile , etc. Naturally you might be an ever smiling personality, full of good vibe but the question is are you posing for a fun photo to keep hidden in your phone or do you want to retain more attention on your social media platforms….the decision is yours !

I can spot a fake smile from a mile away, and so can my 30k instagram followers. Personally i think that, if it is not mandatory that you smile, don’t force it. Let it come naturally. If you happen to get a lucky shot from your photographer & you were actually smiling then BAM ! lucky you.

3. BACKGROUND

The choice of background matters a lot if you’re going to get a great picture of your self.  Noisy & loud backgrounds tend to suck up all the energy from the subject [you] but in this case we’re looking at portraits. You don’t really need the background completing with you, instead choose a background that compliments your outfit or your skin tone. The background should be in contrast to the subject (you) & will set the mood for your picture, so a bad choice, bad photo a good choice, good photo.

3. WEAR APPROPRIATE CLOTHES

There is no escaping ! I will quote a fellow blogger who just posted today, “If you look good, you feel good. But to look good you need to feel good” – Mutsawashe Mwale. Its a simple concept really, what you choose to wear will contribute a major part in the output of your photo. Unless ofcourse you’re doing concept photography were it becomes necessary for you to look some unusual type of way.

4. MAKE USE OF THE ENVIRONMENT

When you’re shooting, every object around you is to your disposal, be it a magazine, a glass all the way down to a grass sample. These objects will give you ideas and clues as to how you will pose next to them, with them, in them or on them. I love being natural in the way I pose for a picture, hence when I know I’m going to be shooting at a certain time, I sometimes carry my object/s in the case that you may be asked to shoot on a plain field with no objects or even a wall to lean on. But if all else is in vein, find elements within yourself, this includes, freezing while tying a shoe, fixing a tie or pulling the strings that come with your tracksuit….the power is in your imagination !

5. OVERALL

After all has been said, it all comes down to, “WHAT EXACTLY IS YOUR IDEA OF A GOOD PHOTO”. The purpose of the photo is what matters most, so someone’s idea of looking good on every photo maybe be totally out of phase with what I’ve said above. Therefore, know yourself, what picture do you want to bring out, the difference between what is good to you & what is good for you !
